Fix-It Clinics

Hennepin County is now holding Fix-It Clinics throughout the community. At these events, residents bring in an item that needs fixing and partner with a volunteer with repair skills. Fix-It Clinics reduce the amount of stuff that gets thrown in the trash, teach valuable troubleshooting and basic repair skills, and build community connections. Volunteers have skills in soldering, electronics and electrical repair, sewing, wood working, small engine repair and general tinkering, and have a strong desire to teach people and empower them.

Examples of items that can potentially be repaired include: sewing machines, Dremel tools, umbrellas, toasters, laptops, clothing, electronics and more.

Crafty Minnesota: Handcrafted Creatures

Christmastime is my favorite time to get crafty!  This free class from the Hennepin County Library system is a great way to make a gift or just a treat for yourself.

For adults. Stitch a tiny stuffed animal that you can hang on your holiday tree, make into a keychain or give as a gift. Choose your favorite creature – birds, dogs or zombies – and bring it to life. Materials provided. Find related books and more at the Library.

As I’ve mentioned before, free music downloads are available through the St. Paul and Hennepin County library systems (click the respective links for each library’s access page).  Some great new albums are out including P!nk’s The Truth About Love, Usher Looking 4 Myself and Mumford & Son’s Babel.

You can access the music collection at library branches or from home computers. The service is limited to three downloads per week, which I consider quite generous.

The songs are made available through a service called Freegal, which the library system does pay for.  If this idea proves popular, then part of the music budget would be used to pay for the Freegal service.
