The next Sample Night Live show is January 2nd at History Theatre in St. Paul.  The January show is extra special as it’s the Staff Favorites Show.  If you’ve never attended Sample Night Live, this show allows you to preview a variety of acts from local productions across the metro area.  This is a great event to attend if you’re on a budget because St. Paul Library card holders can obtain free tickets.  If you have a Hennepin County library card it’s easy to register your card at any of the St. Paul public libraries so you can also get in on this deal too.  Goldstar also offers discount tickets.

I’ve been to about 3 Sample Night Live shows and always have a great time!

This event is hosted to promote the arts so donations are appreciated, particularly if you do not pay for tickets.  If you’d prefer to support Sample Night Live through the purchase of food and drinks, I’m sure that’s appreciated too!

Deepwinter Bonfire Variety Show

This Saturday, a diverse group of dynamic, progressive musicians and other artists from around the Twin Cities will gather at Deepwinter Bonfire, held at McNally Smith College of Music and the History Theatre.  Headlining the show is Coloring Time, an improvisational music group with a flexible line-up that includes:

  • Peter Pisano (Peter Wolf Crier)
  • No Bird Sing
  • Crescent Moon (Kill the Vultures)
  • Chastity Brown
  • Aby Wolf
  • Kristoff Krane
  • Casey O’Brien (Face Candy)
  • John Keston
  • Michelle Kinney (Jelloslave, Mississippi Peace) and others.

The night will also feature Galactic Soul Arkestra, founded by Toki Wright, Mayda, Mally, Luis
Ortega and others. Plus, Improvestra, a new McNally Smith-based multi-generational and
conducted-improvisation orchestra, will perform again for the first time since its fall debut in
2011. The atrium space of the theater will also be the setting for performances by VJ/video artist
Oliver Grudem, dancers from St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, and the expert break
dance crews, The Twin Cities B-Boy Dance Collective and War Machine.

I saw Coloring Time awhile back and it was really interesting.  Improvisational music is truly impressive and it looks like this show will have something for everyone.
