The Internet Cat Video Film Fest 2013

More than 5 months in advance, tickets for the Internet Cat Video Film Fest will go on sale March 9th.  Due to the overwhelming popularity of this event last year, the festival will be held at the MN State Fair Grandstand and there will be a $10 ticket fee.

I’m a bit worried that the event will lose what made it special by moving to a larger, less intimate space.  Last year’s event was free and felt like a community gathering. Everyone brought cats, dogs and a picnic to have on the lawn before the show.  All that will be lost in this larger, commercial venue.  To see my recap from last year, click here.

That said, I’m not sure I can pass up this event.  I at least wont pass it up without giving it a shot to “wow” me in this new venue.

To obtain your tickets:

  • Purchase tickets online at mnstatefair.org. Online ticket sales begin at 10 am on March 9.
  • Order by phone at 800.514.3849.
  • Tickets are also available in person at the State Fairgrounds Box Office during a special limited-time opening from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, March 9. (Regular box office hours will begin in early June.)

The new art exhibit “Painter Painter” at the Walker Art Center sounds really neat.

At a time when artists may work without obligation to medium, why choose the materials of painting? What does it mean for an artist to assume the role of painter today? And just what is at stake for a new generation committed to painting?

Featuring new work by 15 artists from the United States and Europe, the exhibition Painter Painter presents a focused survey of some recent developments in abstract painting and studio practice and reflects on the ever-shifting role of the painter in contemporary art and culture. During the run of the exhibition, the Walker will host a series of events exploring the process and language of painting today.

See it for FREE on Thursday evenings and the first Saturday of each month.  Once inspired by the exhibit, get painting in a series of artist-led activities. All workshops are free.

A Celebration of Still Dots: The Third Man

Photo courtesy of The Walker Art Center

A yearlong project microanalyzing Carol Reed’s cinematic masterpiece The Third Man—in increments of 62 seconds each—the blog Still Dots caught the attention of audiences and critics worldwide. According to Indiewire, “What’s remarkable about projects like Still Dots… is the amount of variety, texture, and inclusiveness possible when the focus of a piece of writing, or any other work, is reduced by somewhat arbitrary constraints.” With the final installment #102, Matt Levine and Jeremy Meckler, interns in the Walker’s film/video department, wrap up the venture begun in December 2011. A free screening of the film is presented in celebration of the completion of this epic undertaking.

Ranked as the best British film of the 20th century by the British Film Institute in 1999, The Third Man blends decisive visual style, tremendous acting performances, and a complexly plotted screenplay—penned by Graham Greene—to produce a deceptively sweet cocktail of spies, lies, and murder in postwar Vienna. Notable for its on-location shooting, canted angles, and brilliant cinematography, it manages to make the city of Vienna a character as important as any of the actors. “Of all the movies that I have seen, this one most completely embodies the romance of going to the movies” (Roger Ebert). 1949, 35mm, 104 minutes.

If you need more flexibility and can’t take advantage of free admission days to the Walker, consider today’s Star Tribune Steal for 50% off admission to the museum and the Cindy Sherman exhibit.

Vita.MN described the Cindy Sherman exhibit as “a sizzling, not-to-be-missed international event” and that the Walker described her as “one of the most important and influential figures in contemporary art.” Comments as favorable as these certainly raised my eyebrows.  So who is Cindy Sherman???

Mining a limitless supply of images from movies, TV, magazines, the Internet, and art history, she captures herself in an astounding range of guises and personas—from screen siren to clown to aging socialite—in work that is by turns amusing and disturbing, distasteful and affecting. Besides model and photographer, she also acts as makeup artist, hairdresser, stylist, and wardrobe mistress, working with an arsenal of wigs, costumes, prosthetics, and props in creating her work. The resulting images offer a sustained, eloquent, and provocative exploration of the construction of contemporary identity and the nature of representation.

I’ve heard so many raves about The British Arrow Awards, which are presented each year at The Walker Art Center.

This holiday season, the Walker carries on a 24-year tradition as host to the ever-popular British Arrow Awards. An eclectic mix of compelling mini-dramas, outrageous wit, and awe-inspiring innovation, the dozens of winning spots come from all across the UK’s multimedia advertising platforms. From high-tech extravaganzas to down-and-dirty comedy, this celebration of commercial creativity brings people back year after year.

Tickets are already available for sale to Walker members.  Tickets to the general public will be made available starting October 16.  It doesn’t take long for the tickets to sell out.  Click here for a list of show times and to purchase tickets online ($10/$8 members).

I sense the Walker Art Center has started a revolution of sorts.  Last night, 10,000 people packed into Open Field at the Walker Art Center to watch videos of cats.  The festival had been recognized by Time Magazine, Gawker, ABC News, among others.  Last night, #catvidfest trended nationally on Twitter.

I had super high expectations for The Internet Cat Video Film Fest and Open Field totally blew me away.  The weather was perfect and the crowd eventually swelled to standing room only!  For an event held in an “open” field, that’s really impressive.  Before the film fest started, there was plenty of activities to get attendees in the mood for fun.  Food and beverage was available for purchase.  There was live music by Brian Laidlaw and the Family Trade.  This folk and bluegrass band was really terrific.  They also had free yarn kitty toys courtesy of  The Big String Thing yarn bombers and make your own custom letterpress posters by Lunalux.  We also visited the station where you could make your own buttons to support your favorite cat (Maru, obviously).  We had such a blast before the film fest even started.  Once we sat down to relax, we started noticing all the cats on tour. Tons of unusually calm cats were on leashes and making the rounds with their owners to say hello to everyone.

The film fest itself was absolutely fantastic.  The crowd completely ATE IT UP!  Everyone was having so much fun cheering and laughing.  It’s good that everyone was in such a friendly spirit because we were all piled on top of each other.  I’m not sure exactly how many people showed up but it was completely packed .  Next year they will definitely need a larger screen and probably to extend the fest over a few days because there would be no more room for growth!

The entire set of film fest videos can be seen here.  This is the perfect set list of videos to watch when you feel sad.  I spent most of the evening laughing so hard that tears were streaming down my face.  This festival put me in a fantastic mood and is probably my favorite event of 2012!  It’s hard to believe that so much enjoyment could be entirely free (except for food purchased).

I have embedded my favorite video of the night below for your enjoyment (MAKE SURE YOUR SOUND IS ON). It may not be as cute as many of the videos in the fest but it’s one of the most creative.  If you’re curious, viewer’s choice went to Henry 2, Paw de Deux, which can be seen here.
