Recap: Social Science at the Science Museum

I was invited to attend the first ever Social Science event at the Science Museum of Minnesota this past Wednesday. This event featured food samplings, a DJ, interactive programs, a classic screening of The Mummy and of course, The King Tut Exhibit and Mummies in the Omnitheater.  All other museum exhibits were open for exploring as well.

I was really excited to see the King Tut Exhibit.  I visited Egypt in November and was looking forward to reliving part of that adventure.  As one would expect, this Exhibit is hardly comparable to visiting the museums and temples in Egypt, however, this exhibit is fantastic for those not wanting to visit a country that’s currently in a state of political unrest.  The King Tut Exhibit features many statutes and artifacts from Egypt including a sampling of treasures from King Tut’s tomb.  King Tut’s treasures are no doubt the highlight of this Exhibit, however, please note that Tut’s famous mask is not part of the exhibit.  I would be surprised if the Cairo Museum ever lent out this piece, however, it is all over the Science Museum’s signs so some people may have that expectation.  King Tut himself is also still at home in his tomb at the Valley of the Kings but there is a replica of his mummy on display.

Social Science is a great way to see the Science Museum.  It was fun to explore the museum when most areas of the museum were quiet and uncrowded (and kid-less).  This event did not really have a “party feel,”  as the DJ was in the lobby, which most people deserted after arriving.  Nontheless, I had a great time and it will be very interesting to see how these Social Science events develop now that they have had their first one under their belt.  The next Social Science event is June 22, 2011, but further details are yet to come.

Here are a couple pictures I took of the Exhibit and Event.
