REVIEW: Les Miserables

I was thrilled to accept an invitation to see Les Miserables at the Orpheum Theatre last evening.  The movie left a bad taste in my mouth that I need to rid myself of.  I did not appreciate either the singing or acting in the movie.  The current touring production of Les Mis includes new staging and re-imagined scenery inspired by Victor Hugo’s paintings. I was a little nervous that the revised production would be simply cashing in on the recent success of the movie and would not be well considered but it was absolutely stunning to watch.  The lighting was low and provided a candlelight glow throughout the scenes.  Watching Les Mis was like viewing a living Renaissance piece of artwork.  It was absolutely beautiful and interesting.

The main reason to go see Les Miserables is the amazing story, soundtrack and performers typically known with national tours.  There are few things more exciting to me than seeing Les Mis live because the musical score contains no filler.  Every song has its goosebump moments that are exhilarating to watch.  The orchestra and singers are strong and the sound reverberates in your bones.  I thought stellar cast members included Jason Forbach (Enjolras), Andrew Varela (Javert) and Briana Carson-Goodman (Eponine).  Timothy Gulan and Shawna M. Hamic as the Thenandiers were also perfection in their comedic and quirky roles.  It may concern some that I did not mention the lead Jean Valjean, however, he was very good.  Peter Lockyer played a great Jean Valjean but was overshadowed a bit by the aforementioned performers.  I think where Peter fell only a bit short is in his lower range, which wasn’t as strong and intense as other Jean Valjean’s I’ve seen.

In sum, this production will not let Les Mis fans down.  It’s also a great production for newbies because I can’t imagine it disappointing anyone that sees it.  Seeing this classic masterpiece live is an experience everyone should have in their lifetime!
