REVIEW: Mamma Mia!

Exuberant Fun! The Ordway’s production of Mamma Mia! is filled with the music of ABBA, twined together with a fast-paced story line, and the energy of the multi-talented cast.

The characters are introduced a few at a time on a dreamy, beautiful set depicting a Greek island.  We meet Donna, the owner of the inn, on the eve of her daughter’s wedding.  Her daughter Sophie has a secret plan as to wedding guests, and it isn’t long before we are let in on the plan, as guests begin to arrive.  The drama and hilarity unfolds through the songs, creative set changes, and joyful choreography.
If you’ve previously experienced Mamma Mia!, this production has a fun, updated energy and is worth checking out. The only downside was a sound problem as the sound balance had significant glitches.  When actors were singing softly, the sound was fine but when belting out the ABBA songs which needed volume, the sound was harsh and distorted.  There were even a few moments of feedback.  One would assume that these sound problems would be adjusted and solved for subsequent performances.
Other than the sound problems, the evening was enjoyable, and it was delightful to join in the audience’s enthusiastic response to this beloved show.

Mama Mia! is at The Ordway in St. Paul through August 5, 2018. Tickets start at $34. Click here for information on their rush ticket program.
