Minnesota Dance Theatre shines the spotlight on a trio of female choreographers with a program of bold, breathtaking works entitled Fierce/Feminine: Dance by Women Choreographers. Rising star Emery LeCrone returns to MDT for her second choreographic commission. Nuanced, ingenious and fresh from the stage at just 26, LeCrone contributes several works to the show, including a world premiere. Joanie Smith, 2012 Sage Award recipient for Outstanding Choreography, brings her international reputation for “virtuosity, substance, craft, and pure abandonment” to the repertory performance. And Minnesota Dance Theatre founder Loyce Houlton, after 34 years of creating, teaching and producing dance, is renowned for her Nutcracker Fantasy. She’s also one of the first American women to gain international recognition through her distinct aesthetic and a lasting legacy of trademark repertory. Featured in the show is Knoxville, Summer of 1915, one of Houlton’s own personal favorites.
Along with the show, they’ll have games, races, and secure bike parking for your two-wheeled ride. Not into biking? No problem! Minneapolis’ own Brave New Workshop can stake its claim as a true comedy pioneer — this company has been crafting original satirical sketches and creating laughs longer than any other theater in the entire country. And to celebrate that 55-year, 280-show legacy, they’re bringing back some all-time favorites for a best-of comedy revue. Founder Dudley Riggs kicked things off in 1961 with a recurring musical-comedy show that parodied Miss America, and by ’67, BNW was producing edgy topical shows like The Race Riot Revue: Hate Is a Summer Festival and The Lyndon Frolics: Great Fables for the Great Society. They continued skewering the status quo through the rest of the 20th century and beyond, right up to today’s hilarious hit show, Lance Armstrong’s Steroid-Pumped Comedy Revue.Relive the laughs with this greatest-hits extravaganza.
